Carl B. Stokes US Courthouse
Cleveland, Ohio

This 727,000 SF 24-story building is the US Federal Courthouse, Northern District Headquarters of Ohio and features major interior spaces such as courtrooms, judges’ chambers, Clerk of US District Court, US Attorney, Probation Services, Pre-trial Services, US Marshall’s Office, holding cells, offices and administrative areas, food service areas, and a 200-car underground parking garage.

Due to poor soil quality and compressible layers of soil, in the downtown Cleveland area most buildings utilize deep caisson foundations. Careful review of the soils report led us to believe that a substantial amount of money could be saved by using a mat foundation. A second soils investigation was commissioned which confirmed our belief and a two meter rigid mat was used which resulted in a cost savings of $2 million.

We received an Outstanding Achievement Award from the Ohio Chapter of the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) for this project.
