Cleveland
Clinic
The Arnold and Sydell Miller Family Pavilion
Cleveland, Ohio
This 953,000 SF 10-story structure was
designed using various structural systems to better meet the
needs of the Clinic. Structural steel, concrete flat slabs
and concrete pan joist floor systems were used. Eight concrete
cores and one concrete moment frame provide the lateral force
resisting system for the building. An 8-story, 20 feet long
wing, like a ‘sail’, was incorporated in the building design
at the north-east corner. The building was founded on drilled
shafts and grade beams. A mat slab was designed to protect
the basement from water infiltration due to the high water
table on site. An interstitial space was provided between
the mat foundation and the slab on grade for the placement
of the various utility lines.
