Battelle New Laboratory Building
Columbus, Ohio

A campus-wide facility assessment study determined Battelle’s research would be best served if several laboratories located in older buildings were consolidated in a new 120,000 SF facility. The functional and flexible labs were designed with the ability to function as wet labs for chemistry, biology or pharmaceutical research, or as dry labs for physical science research like robotics and to enhance future adaptability. The result was a 3-story building with mechanical/electrical interstitial floors, clear structural spans, and a systems design that distributes services in conjunction with the 11’- 0” x 33’- 0” laboratory planning grid.

There are new specific lab areas for bioanalytical chemistry, histology, clinical laboratory, non-hazard lab, dose prep high hazard barrier facility, mass spectroscopy, pharmacokinetics, engineering test cells, clean rooms, black labs, radioactive chemical labs, and an animal facility. Lab and support functions include bio-hazard containment hoods, equipment rooms, dark rooms, -20 degree freezer morgue and large bays with overhead service carriers.
